Wonderful! 'Joy to the World' - by Carolyn Miller, Amanda Barratt & Erica Vetsch

Joy to the World

About the book:

Inspirational Regency romance with a Christmas twist from three best-selling authors

In Joy to the World, three popular authors come together to offer a heartwarming collection of holiday Regency romance. Based on lines from a beloved Christmas carol, these three novellas in one book have depth, faith, and satisfying stories all packed into the perfect length for readers to curl up and take a brief break from their holiday busyness.

"Heaven and Nature Sing" by Carolyn Miller
Two music lovers, deeply devoted to each other, were on the brink of engagement when family circumstances drove them apart. How can they ever overcome their obligations and fears to find their way back into each other's arms?

"Far as the Curse is Found" by Amanda Barratt
One winter night, a woman struggling to provide for her illegitimate child encounters a scarred veteran of the Napoleonic Wars on the streets of London. Can love conquer the darkness of two broken pasts?

"Wonders of His Love" by Erica Vetsch
A Scots portrait painter with a hidden identity finds work at a noble manor house over the holidays. He never imagined he'd fall in love with the emotionally frozen widow there. Now he wants nothing more than to thaw her heart.

My review:

This was such a wonderful collection of Regency stories!  There was a good mix of lost love, redemption, forgiveness, new love and faith.  Some of the characters were strong Christians, one finds faith, there were many prayers said and a church service or two attended.  It was interesting to see people from different classes interacting and sometimes falling in love.  It was fun to see characters from previous books show up yet these stories read very well as stand-alones.  There was some wonderful romance and it was so satisfying to see these characters who had been through so much find love.  The writing was very well done.  The stories had depth and didn't feel rushed as so many novellas do.  This is one of the best novella collections I've ever read!  I highly recommend it!

Softly Blows the Bugle - Amish of Weaver's Creek 3 - by Jan Drexler

 Cover Art

About the book:

Welcome back to the Amish community at Weaver's Creek, where the bonds of family and faith bind up the brokenhearted.

When Elizabeth Kaufman received the news of her husband's death at the Battle of Vicksburg in 1863, she felt only relief. She determined that she would never be at the mercy of any man again, even if it meant not having a family of her own. Then along came Aaron Zook . . .

Despite the severity of his injuries, Aaron has resolved to move west and leave the pain of the past behind him. He never imagined that the Amish way of life his grandfather had rejected long ago would be so enticing. That, and a certain widow he can't get out of his mind.

Yet, even in a simple community, life has a way of getting complicated. Aaron soon finds that while he may have left the battlefield behind, there is another fight he must win--the one for the heart of the woman he loves.

My review:

This was an interesting story set in a fascinating time of history, right after the Civil War ended.  Aaron's friend, Jonas, comes back from the war wanting to marry Katie and has to be allowed to join the church to do that.  It was interesting to see how he was viewed for going to fight and the discussion to decide if he would be allowed to.  I really felt for Elizabeth and all she had gone through and that's why I was so surprised that she was swayed so easily to fall for Solomon, a new Amish man in town.  Even when she had misgivings and there were warning signs that he might not be all he seemed, she convinced herself it was fine.  I also felt like she made a couple of really dumb decisions.  For those reasons I was pretty frustrated for a while with her.   I get that she thought she would get her dream after all but still.  She obviously had issues from her marriage and didn't really understand grace or forgiveness as she kept punishing herself for past choices, despite having grown up in the Amish faith.  I really liked Aaron as he was self-sacrificing, gentle and determined.  He had much to learn about the Amish faith and lifestyle plus he had turned away from God as a child when his mother died.  There were a few sweet romantic moments and some suspenseful ones.  There was also a small story line about Levi, a young man in the district, meeting someone, too.  This story was fine as a stand-alone but I probably would have liked it better having the background of the characters from the first two books.  You might like it if you like Amish or historical fiction.

Amusing Romance! 'Cul-de-sac War' - by Melissa Ferguson

53438008. sy475

About the book:

Melissa Ferguson’s new novel proves that good fences make good neighbors—and that sometimes love and hate share a backyard.

Free-spirited Bree Leake doesn’t want to be tied down. She’s had more jobs than she can count—and the next stop on her journey is the nation’s oldest live performance theater in Abingdon, Virginia. Just when it’s time to move on again, Bree’s parents make her an offer: hold steady in Abingdon for one full year, and they will give her the one thing she’s always wanted—her grandmother’s cabin. She feels like her dreams are coming true.

But life at the theater throws her some curve balls.

And then there’s her new neighbor—Chip McBride.

Chip is the man everyone in town seems to love, yet he’s nothing but a thorn in Bree’s side. She would move heaven and earth to have him out of her life, but according to the bargain she’s struck, she cannot move out of her house. So begins Bree’s obsessive new mission: to drive Chip out of the neighborhood—and fast.

Bree isn’t the only one who’s a wee bit competitive, and as Chip registers what Bree’s up to, he’s more than willing to fight fire with fire. But as their pranks escalate, both of their fragile job ambitions start to wobble. And it doesn’t help that the line between love and hate is starting to blur.

In Melissa Ferguson’s latest rom-com, two enemies find something they never expected in one another—taking “all’s fair in love and war” to a hilarious and heartwarming new level.

 My review:

This was an amusing story about a couple of misunderstandings escalating and the craziness that ensues.  It's funny how you can be so wrong about a person and Chip ended up being a really good guy.  It was so sweet how he took care of their elderly neighbor and sometimes put others first even at great inconvenience to himself.  He also was pretty wise about some things but not so much about others. The situation with his dog was hilarious!  There were some sweet romantic moments and some 'I can't believe they just did that' moments.  Chip goes to church, has a Bible and hinted at believing there's a heaven but there's not a mention of what Bree believes.  It bothered me that they don't talk more about her beliefs and that he did lie to try to get a job.  Both Chip and Bree have some stressful family situations to deal with, along with the work stress, but the story overall is light and fun.  I also liked that Cassie pops in for an update, Ferguson's heroine in her first book.  I would recommend if you like humorous romance.

I received a kindle copy of this book free from Netgalley.  I was not reimbursed for this review.  All opinions are my own.

Another Wonderful Romance! 'Autumn Skies' - Bluebell Inn Romance 3 - by Denise Hunter

About the book:

Facing the past is easier if you don’t have to face it alone.

The Bluebell Inn is turning a profit, and it’s time for the Bennett siblings to sell it and move on. Only Grace has plans to stay in the small lake town of Bluebell, North Carolina, where she hopes her growing outfitters business will save her from the loneliness of her siblings’ departure and the persistent sense of unworthiness in her life.

A gunshot wound resurrects the past for Secret Service agent Wyatt Jennings, and a mandatory leave of absence lands him in Bluebell. There he must come to grips with the tragedy that altered his life fourteen years ago.

When Wyatt books a room at the Bluebell Inn, sparks fly between him and Grace. She volunteers to be his mountain guide, and he soon opens up to her, drawn to her strength and sense of humor. But both are reticent to talk about the survivor’s guilt they each carry, and when their pasts finally collide, their budding romance might not survive the truth.

From the bestselling author of The Convenient Groom and A December Bride (now beloved Hallmark Original movies) comes the third and final novel in the Bluebell Inn series.

My review:

This was another wonderful romance by Denise Hunter!  Wyatt was an amazing character, brave and dedicated to his job as a Secret Service agent but struggling with a tragedy he endured as a boy.  He also had such a wonderful sense of honor and treated Grace with such respect.  Grace was also a strong character, mature for her age, intuitive and also struggling with an event in her childhood.  I liked how they both were trying to work on their issues.  Their banter was fun and I liked how Grace was independent and a little bit strong-willed.  It was also so romantic that they each really got to each other, Grace having dated a lot but not really seeing what the big deal was and Wyatt getting bowled over by a small-town girl.  They had a lot of chemistry and some wonderful romantic moments.  Grace was a Christian while Wyatt hadn't attended church in a while but was starting to get back to his faith.  They had some good conversations about God and why bad things happen.  There was some action and I loved that we got to see Grace's siblings' love stories continue.  I highly recommend this story if you like romance!

Fascinating! 'The Conqueror' - Constantine's Empire 1 - by Bryan Litfin

About the book:

AD 309. Rome teeters on the brink of war. Constantine's army is on the move. On the Rhine frontier, pagan Germanic barbarian Brandulf Rex joins the Roman army as a spy. Down in Rome, senator's daughter Junia Flavia finds herself embroiled in anti-Christian politics as she works on behalf of the church.

As armies converge and forces beyond their control threaten to destroy everything they have worked for, these two people from different worlds will have to fight together to bring down the evil Emperor Maxentius. But his villainous plans and devious henchmen are not easily overcome.

Will Rex and Flavia live to see the Empire bow the knee to Christ? Or will their part in the story of Constantine's rise meet an untimely and brutal end?

My review:

What a wild and crazy ride!  There was so much action in this book, not to mention political intrigue and church history.  It was incredibly fascinating!  I really admired Flavia as she had such a strong faith, even while she went through dangerous circumstances.  Rex was wonderful, too, self-sacrificing on the one hand and reluctant to give up his violent ways on the other.  He had a hard time understanding who Jesus was as Flavia's God and why he should worship Him instead of Hercules.  There was so much mentioned in this book I want to learn more about.  It's a fascinating time period but also a hard one to read about when you see how women and slaves were treated.  The story wasn't graphic, however.  There's a good amount of detail that really fleshed out the time period. There was some romance.  This is the first book and I'm interested to see where it goes from here.  I would recommend it if you like history and action.

Sweet Enjoyable Romance! 'The Key to Love' - by Betsy St. Amant

About the book:

Love doesn't always look the way we expect

The only thing Bri Duval loves more than baking petit fours is romance. So much so that she's created her own version of the famous Parisian love-lock wall at the bakery where she works in Story, Kansas. She never expects a video involving the wall to go viral--or for Trek Magazine to send travel writer Gerard Fortier to feature the bakery. He's definitely handsome, but Bri has been holding out for an epic love story like the one her parents had--and that certainly will not include the love-scorning Gerard.

Just when it seems the Pastry Puff is poised for unprecedented success, a series of events threaten not just the bakery but the pedestal she's kept her parents on all these years. Maybe Gerard is right about romance. Or maybe Bri's recipe just needs to be tweaked.

My review:

This was a sweet (pun intended) story about opposites attracting between a romantic and a cynic and the quirky matchmakers who make it happen!  I liked Gerard a lot and felt for the painful past he had, both the messed-up childhood and his broken heart.  He was funny and straightforward and gruff.  I liked Bri, too, but she was more naive and dramatic and had put her parents' relationship on such a pedestal that finding out something negative about it pretty much sent her over the edge.  I liked the fun banter between them and the wonderful romantic moments.  I loved when he crashed her book club and argued about Pride and Prejudice!  It's mentioned that Bri knew her mom was a Christian and that Bri attended church but not much more is said about her faith while Gerard had a past bad experience with the church so he was more cynical of that, too.  Some well-timed conversations with the pastor in Story started to make him think.  There were some really quirky townsfolk, especially the two elderly ladies who were pretty hilarious. Also, I really want some baked goods!  Overall, I really enjoyed this story about risk, roots and the perfect dessert!  I highly recommend it if you like romantic stories!

Interesting! 'The Plans We Made' - by Kathryn Cushman & Lauren Beccue

About the book:

When past secrets hold the only key to hope for the future…

Caroline Chapman is reeling from a broken engagement. Determined to start again, she moves cross-country for her dream job of planning events in the historical mansions of Newport, Rhode Island. Just as her life is getting back on track, she gets an email that shakes her very foundations.

Linda Riley’s life looks picture perfect - a wonderful husband, two great kids, involved in church and the community. Then comes the diagnosis that shatters the facade. In order to save her son’s life, she must reveal secrets that can rip everything apart.

Connected by more than painful circumstances, these two women discover a sacred bond. In this beautiful story of love, loss, and the fight for life, Caroline and Linda experience the reality that life doesn’t always go according to The Plans We Made.

My review:

I enjoyed this story about two women whose lives take a sharp turn from where they thought they were going.  I liked both women as they were both strong and had to deal with tough circumstances.  Linda had a strong faith and it seemed that Caroline also believed, it just wasn't as obvious.  It was mentioned that Chris attended church but he was struggling to forgive his uncle so that could explain why there wasn't as much of a mention about his faith, either.  I admired Chris' integrity and that he did the right thing, even when it was incredibly hard.  I also admired his attitude, as he took the high road and didn't hold a grudge again.  There were some sweet romantic moments.  I liked the message about being authentic and real, about forgiveness and how brokenness can be redeemed.  I would recommend this story if you like romance or stories about women's issues.

Molly - Sewing in SoCal 1 - by Sarah Monzon

About the book:

If there’s one thing you should know about me, it’s that I absolutely refuse to tell a lie no matter the consequences. So don’t ask me a direct question unless you’re prepared for a direct answer—that’s something my SoCal sewing girlfriends have learned the hard way.
But who would have thought my honesty policy would get me fired from my job at the preschool? Or that a desperate—and not to mention devastatingly handsome—single father of one of my (now-former) students would hire me that same day as a nanny for his daughter?
I’m an education professional. How hard can taking care of a four-year-old and her over-stressed, over-worked father be?

My review:

This was a sweet story about a very honest girl!  I liked Molly and her honesty, even though it did get her into some predicaments!  She was also very caring and went above and beyond as a nanny.  Ben sounded pretty amazing, too, but I couldn't figure out how he took care of his daughter so long by himself while working so many hours.  This was a clean romance with some cute moments.  I didn't like the term "white lies" that was used, as lying is lying.  Ben seemed like a Christian from different things he said but while Molly had some familiarity with the Bible, it wasn't clear whether she just believed God existed or if there was more to it than that.  This is more of a clean read than a Christian romance.  There were a lot of amusing moments and I also liked Molly's roommates and look forward to reading their stories.  I recommend this story if you like humor and romance.

Enjoyable Sequel! 'Until I Met You' - Restoring Heritage 2 - by Tari Faris

About the book:

Welcome back to Heritage, Michigan--the small town with a big heart

When she hears that the town of Heritage is looking for a new librarian, Libby Kingsley jumps at the opportunity. Little did she know the library is barely more than a basement room stuffed with dusty, outdated books. What the community really needs is a new building. But the only funds available are those being channeled into the new town square, and the landscape architect in charge of the project wants nothing to do with her plans.

All Austin Williams wants to do is get the town square project finished, and he hopes it is enough to save the family business. Then he can extricate himself from the town that reveres the brother who cost him so much. But the local media and the town's new librarian seem to be conspiring against him at every turn. Will the determined bookworm find her way into his blueprints--and possibly even his heart?

My review:

I enjoyed this story that took us back to the charming town of Heritage.  I liked getting reacquainted with the wonderful characters, especially as we got to revisit what was hinted at in book one with Nate and Olivia.  I liked that we saw more of his past and what made him tick, even though I was a bit frustrated with his stubbornness.  I also enjoyed getting to know his brother and he was also incredibly stubborn as he was dealing with his unforgiveness toward Nate.  I have to admit the boys drove me a little nuts with how they acted.  I felt for Libby and a trauma she went through that gave her anxiety and a distrust of men especially.  I admired her courage and how she worked to make things right.  She hadn't trusted God since her brother Luke was kidnaped when they were children and I loved that she read 'The Hiding Place' and learned from Corrie Ten Boom's faith.  I also liked Olivia and her straightforwardness and determination.  There were some wonderful romantic moments.  It works as a stand-alone but I'd recommend the first book as it was amazing and Luke and Nate feature prominently in that one as well.  I'd recommend this story if you like romance

Fun Light Read! 'The Christmas Swap' - by Melody Carlson

About the book:

All Emma Daley wants this holiday season is a white Christmas. But the young teacher and struggling musician sure can't find that in sunny Arizona. Luckily, there's someone living in a perfect mountain home in the Colorado Rockies looking to make a vacation trade.

West Prescott is an in-demand songwriter and talented musician who put his own singing career on hold to write songs for celebrity acts to perform. When his mother convinces him to do a vacation trade for Christmas, he never imagined one of the houseguests would be so sweet--or so strikingly pretty. Naturally, he decides to stick around, and to get better acquainted, he poses as the caretaker of his own house. But when Emma's friend Gillian discovers his true identity and sets her sights on him, things get . . . messy.

My review:

This was a fun light read perfect for getting me in the Christmas spirit!  I loved the idea of going to a ski town for Christmas, especially as Emma had never seen snow!  It seemed to be a Hallmark movie kind of setting.  I really liked Emma and her peaceful and peacemaking ways.  Gillian and her mom were a bit annoying but it didn't get too bad.  They definitely created some drama!  West seemed like a good guy and prayed at different times in the story.  Emma's parents were missionaries and that was about the extent of the faith content.  There was a little bit of romance, some skiing and music and of course, Christmas!  I read Melody Carlson's new Christmas book every year and I recommend this one if you're looking for a sweet, cozy Christmas story.

Beautiful Story! 'The Edge of Belonging' - by Amanda Cox

About the book:

When Ivy Rose returns to her hometown to oversee her late grandmother's estate sale, she soon discovers that the woman left behind more than trinkets and photo frames--she provided a path to the truth behind Ivy's adoption. Shocked, Ivy seeks clues to her past, but a key piece to the mystery is missing.

Twenty-four years earlier, Harvey James finds an abandoned newborn who gives him a sense of human connection for the first time in his life. His desire to care for the baby runs up against the stark fact that he is homeless. When he becomes entwined with two people seeking to help him find his way, Harvey knows he must keep the baby a secret or risk losing the only person he's ever loved.

In this dual-timeline story from debut novelist Amanda Cox, the truth--both the search for it and the desire to keep it from others--takes center stage as Ivy and Harvey grapple with love, loss, and letting go.

My review:

I love split time novels and this one was just beautiful!  Both storylines were intriguing and made me eager to discover the mystery surrounding Ivy's birth.  I liked Ivy a lot and felt for all she was going through but Harvey and Grandma Pearl stole the show.  Harvey's brokenness and Grandma Pearl's love and determination were a match made in heaven and it was wonderful to see his transformation.  There was also quite a difference between the men in her life, from a jerk of an ex to the best friend who was always there for her.  She had some issues to work through, also, because of her adoption.  A couple of the characters dealt with anxiety, panic attacks and depression and I appreciate seeing that portrayed more in Christian books.  There were some sweet romantic moments and so many touching moments  filled with redemption and love.  This book made me laugh and cry and showed what a difference one life can make.  I highly recommend it!

Timely Suspense! 'Nine' - by Rachelle Dekker

About the book:

Some secrets can't stay hidden

Zoe Johnson has spent most of her life living in the shadows, never drawing attention to herself, never investing in people or places. But when a wide-eyed, bedraggled teenager with no memory walks into the diner where Zoe works, everything changes.

Against her better judgment, Zoe, who has been trying to outrun her own painful memories of the past, finds herself attempting to help a girl who doesn't seem to have any past at all. With little warning, they must follow the only sure thing they know: a woman hundreds of miles away, will either save them . . . or be the last person to see them alive.

My review:

This was an intriguing story about survival and choices and whether or not our past determines who we are.  There was a lot of action, some violence, though not gory, and a little bit of romance.  This story actually refers back to "The Girl Behind the Red Rope," I realized as I got quite a ways into it but it works well as a stand-alone also.  There's talk about good and evil, right and wrong and mention of God, though no overt faith message.  I enjoyed this suspenseful story that also made me think.  I recommend it if you like suspense, especially if it's a little out of the ordinary.

Adorable! 'A Dazzle of Diamonds' - A Georgia Coast Romance 3 - by Liz Johnson

 Cover Art

About the book:

Penelope Hunter loves her job as the event manager at one of Savannah's premier historic venues--until her ex-fiancé walks into her office with his new bride-to-be. Surely she cannot be expected to plan their wedding. To make matters worse, a scheming social matriarch is threatening to take her big-ticket event elsewhere, especially if Penelope insists on being seen with her best friend, Tucker Westbrook.

Since returning from serving two tours in the Middle East, Tucker has built a thriving security company. His work is nearly as stabilizing as his lifelong friendship with Penelope. But when the lone candidate for county sheriff goads him, Tucker loses his cool and ends up on the ballot--and on the receiving end of a smear campaign claiming the Westbrooks were traitors to the South.

To clear his name, Tucker and Penelope must join forces to find the truth behind a lost Civil War treasure. But the more time they spend together, the closer she comes to losing her job--and falling helplessly in love.

My review:

This book was too cute for words!  I love the story lines where best friends fall in love and this was one of the best!  There were so many cute moments as Tucker and Penelope tried to hold onto their friendship while falling for each other, the lines getting blurred between reality and pretending.  And talk about some swoon-worthy kisses!  The historical aspect was fascinating, too, as we see into the past through journal entries and what another woman went through in Atlanta near the end of the Civil War, plus another love story!  The search for the treasure was interesting.  Both Tucker and Penelope were Christians but realized they weren't checking with God like they should have in planning their lives.  Tucker was a bit impulsive and felt he had something to prove to his dad.  Penelope felt rejected and had a hard time trusting.  This worked well as a stand-alone but I definitely want to read the first two.  I highly recommend this book!

 52617576. sy475

About the book:

Lacey O’Connor is finally a sure thing for the promotion she’s spent ten years working for. But when a scandal rocks her firm she finds herself on a collision course with the one person she has spent five years trying to forget. Only to discover he doesn’t even remember her…

Victor Carlisle has spent the last three years trying to convince his family he’s no longer the playboy alcoholic who tore their life apart. When a company merger is announced with a US sister firm, he’s presented with the perfect opportunity to prove he’s changed. Only to find himself falling for his competition and the one woman his family will never accept.

As the competition intensifies the choice looms between the professional and the personal. Can they find a way beyond their past decisions and present aspirations to take a chance on the one thing they’re not looking for?

My review:

This was a wonderful romance about second chances and forgiveness!  I loved that Lacey was a strong woman who knew what she wanted and went for it.  I felt so bad for Victor, a former bad boy whose family won't let him get past his former life to make a new one.  I loved how he was so mindful of what he did now and was always trying to be honorable.  They both had plenty of baggage from their dysfunctional families that influenced how they viewed the world and reacted to it.  It was intriguing for Lacey to have this information about their past that Victor didn't remember and I kept wondering when it would come out.  Victor was new to faith as he found God in AA and prayed and tried to figure out what God wanted him to do.  Lacey didn't believe in God because she wanted to run her own life and not depend on anyone.  There were some funny moments and some sweet romantic ones, some action and twists.  I loved that she had such wise friends who were there for her and gave her the best advice.  I wondered as I was reading this if there was a story about one of her friends and I see there is!  So this looked like a stand-alone and worked great as one but there is a related book I can't wait to read!  This was my first Kara Isaac book but definitely not my last!  I highly recommend it!

Fun Romance! 'The Truth About Fame' - Faith & Fortune 2 - by Toni Shiloh

 52749966. sy475

About the book:

My life has always been in the spotlight. Born to two famous parents and then quickly rising to "super" status in the modeling world ensured that I, Astoria "Tori" Bell, would always have my image plastered across newsstands. Unfortunately, adoring fans weren't always magnanimous and now I have a stalker on my hands.

Oddly enough, the tall, dark, and all-too handsome bodyguard hired to protect me seems more harmful than the threatening notes from the stalker. As well as his plan to flush out the danger by proposing a fake engagement.

The lines between pretend and reality blur and I have to shore up my resolves. Baggage from my past means I can't let myself be vulnerable. But the way Marcel Fox treats me has me thinking otherwise.

With a new rock on my finger and the man who put it there by my side, happily ever after seems like a possibility or is that as fake as my public persona?

The Truth About Fame is the second book in the Christian Chick Lit series: Faith & Fortune.

My review:

This was a fun romantic suspense I really enjoyed!  The dynamic between Fox and Tori was funny as they seemed to get on each other's nerves, yet there was a strong attraction below the surface.  There were some sweet romantic moments.  Fox definitely has a way with words!  Tori's pretty much the only character here who doesn't want to believe in God and there were some good conversations about faith and forgiveness.  I liked Tori's sassiness and strength and also her tender heart and how much she cared for Fox's niece and the sick children she visited.  Fox was an amazing guy, sweet yet tough, can quote Pride and Prejudice and discuss the Bible, then save your life!  There was also some action.  I liked the relaxed way the story's written in the first person, yet I did wish for Fox's point of view.  I also liked that a lot of the characters were black as you don't see that too often, especially in the main couple.  This book worked well as a stand-alone yet I wondered if they had met in book one and assumed that book was about her brother and her best friend.  I definitely want to read that one and the next book about her other best friend.  I highly recommend this book!

Wonderful! Review & Giveaway of 'The Gentleman Spy' - Serendipity & Secrets 2 - by Erica Vetsch

About the book:

He only wanted a duchess for a day--but she's determined to make it a marriage for life

When his father and older brother suddenly pass away, the new Duke of Haverly is saddled with a title he never expected to bear. To thwart the plans of his scheming family, the duke impulsively marries a wallflower. After all, she's meek and mild; it should be easy to sequester her in the country and get on with his life--as a secret agent for the Crown.

But his bride has other ideas. She's determined to take her place not only as his duchess but as his wife. As a duchess, she can use her position to help the lowest of society--the women forced into prostitution because they have no skills or hope. Her endeavors are not met favorably in society, nor by her husband who wishes she'd remain in the background as he ordered.

Can the duke succeed in relegating her to the sidelines of his life? When his secrets are threatened with exposure, will his new wife be an asset or a liability?

My review:

Erica Vetsch has done it again!  This was a wonderful story full of romance and intrigue!  I loved that Charlotte was an unusual woman, well-read and intelligent, unconventional by society's standards.  It was so interesting learning about the things she was interested in.  I loved that she wanted to help prostitutes, women she's supposed to pretend don't even exist, much less get her hands dirty helping.  She had a strong faith in God, yet felt like she couldn't really trust Him to give her good gifts because of her upbringing.  Marcus was an honorable man who tried to always do his duty and serve his country but felt that he needed to keep his life compartmentalized.  Keep God in one box, his wife in another and his spying in yet another but he found it wasn't so easy to keep everything separated.  It was sweet to see how Marcus cared for her and found things to make her happy when she'd has so little before.  There were some sweet romantic moments.  The spying was interesting as they tried to find out who was behind the attempt on the Prince Regent's life.  There was some action.  This worked as a stand-alone but I would recommend reading the first book where we're introduced to Marcus and that also contains the wonderful love story of his friends, who feature prominently in this book.  Overall, this was a sweet love story I highly recommend!

Cute Story! 'Sweet Melody' - A Seabrook Romance - by Heidi McCahan

51893056. sx318 sy475

About the book:

When a struggling bakery owner is rescued by a wannabe songwriter with hidden culinary talents, they discover they can make sweet harmony … if they can only learn to work together.

Rhett Foster longs to change the world with his music, yet he can’t even finish writing one song. Battered by a string of failures and disillusioned, he returns home to Portland, Oregon. While he desperately wants to create a chart-topping hit, his dad mandates a new mission: move to coastal vacation hotspot Seabrook, Washington and expand the family’s successful restaurant chain.
In danger of destroying her late parents’ legacy if she doesn’t diversify her menu, Lindsay Carmichael will try anything to save her bakery. But with a tiny budget and an injured employee who can’t work, she has no choice but to sink the last of her savings into buying a dilapidated food truck and hiring Rhett as a part-time barista. What she doesn’t know is that the handsome songwriter has a secret … one that could destroy her business and her heart.

My review:

I enjoyed this story about a determined young woman who's had her heart broken once and the songwriter who feels he can never make his dad proud.  I liked Lindsay's perseverance but did feel like she bit off more than she could chew with buying the food truck.  There was quite a bit of shop talk as she tried out different recipes and worried about her business failing.  She was also angry at the family who had ruined her parents' business and was pretty bitter toward them.  Rhett sounded like a good guy who just needed a break but who should have been honest with her sooner.  He struggled to forgive his dad for how he'd been treated.  He also wasn't sure if he should give up songwriting, which was his passion, to work for his dad's business.  Lindsay's best friend was a strong Christian and a good witness to Lindsay about who God is.  Neither Lindsay nor Rhett were Christians.  There was some sweet romance.  There's also another couple who are total opposites that seemed to be interested in each other and I hope the next book is about them!  I thought the narrator did a good job but I definitely had to listen to it at at least one and a half speed.  I would recommend this story if you like romance, especially centered around coffee and food!

Wonderful Sequel! 'Louisa: A Modern Faith Story' - Modern Faith 2 - by Beth Troy

54339266. sy475

About the book:

What happens after salvation – when you’ve changed, but others don’t see it? Author Beth Troy addresses this question from the first page, which finds Lu Sokolowski – the engaging and relatable heroine from Troy’s redemptive debut novel, Lu – back in her hometown with her expectations of a new life, dashed.

Lu has returned to Dunlap’s Creek with a hope to stay, but she struggles to right the wrongs she’d left behind, build a career outside of writing, and move on from the man who has moved on from her.

Louisa is a modern faith story of life after salvation that openly explores:
• The disconnect between who we are and how others perceive us
• The struggle in speaking up for our beliefs
• The question of when to let go and when to fight
• The journey in claiming a new identity

In turns captivating and pointed, Louisa is a novel of a woman coming into the fullness of life God has for her. It’s for women who have experienced this for themselves and for women who doubt whether such a life exists. It’s for women who understand that a life of faith isn’t without struggle or mistakes. Louisa is about restoration – in its grit and glory.

My review:

This was a wonderful sequel and I was rooting for Lu all the way as she came back to Dunlap's Creek with such high hopes.  It was a bit painful to watch Jackson with someone else and it was almost worse that she seemed like a wonderful woman, too.  I felt for him as he felt torn between them but thought nothing had changed for her regarding her lack of faith so he knew he couldn't be with her.  I loved that we see the story from both Lu and Jackson's points of view.  I liked seeing Lu discover a new career and also take on a big history project for the church.  She's lost at the beginning in so many ways and it's wonderful to see her find her footing.  She also discovered so much about her deceased grandma's past and also made an unlikely friend.  She's brave and honest and funny and I just love her.  I loved the honest faith conversations, even in her own head.  There was a bit of romance.  This novel's a bit grittier than most Christian fiction as there's a swear word or two and there's mention of a secondary character who gets drunk and sleeps around, along with mention of prior mistakes Lu made, though it's not graphic at all.  I definitely recommend you read the first book, Lu, before this one as this continues right where it left off and it will make so much more sense, not to mention it was incredible.  I highly recommend this book!

What an Adventure! 'An Appalachian Summer' - by Ann H. Gabhart

Cover Art

About the book:

Discover what happens when one intrepid young woman steps away from the past into a beautiful, wide-open future
In 1933 Louisville, Kentucky, even the ongoing economic depression cannot keep Piper Danson's parents from insisting on a debut party. After all, their fortune came through the market crash intact, and they've picked out the perfect suitor for their daughter. Braxton Crandall can give her the kind of life she's used to. The only problem? This is not the man--or the life--she really wants.

When Piper gets the opportunity to volunteer as a horseback Frontier Nursing courier in the Appalachian Mountains for the summer, she jumps at the chance to be something other than a dutiful daughter or a kept wife in a loveless marriage. The work is taxing, the scenery is jaw-droppingly gorgeous, and the people she meets along the way open a whole new world to her. The longer she stays, the more an advantageous marriage slips from her grasp. But something much more precious--true love--is drawing ever closer.

My review:

This was a charming story about a society girl wanting to do something different and make a difference in the world, even if just for a summer.  It was interesting seeing all of the tasks Piper took on as she helped the nurses in their duties.  I really admired her fortitude and perseverance, especially considering what an easy life she normally led.  There were some interesting, quirky people in the mountains, from the nurses to the mountain folk.  Her aunt, Truda, was a wonderful, independent woman she took after and I liked that we got her story, too, as she came to visit and see about a lost opportunity.  Jamie was a wonderful character, too, but a little frustrating as I wanted him to be a little bolder.  Piper started to question what her faith meant to her and if she knew what God's will was for her but it seemed like she never really came to a conclusion.  There were a few conversations from different people about their faith.  There was some romance and a lot of adventure!  I would recommend this story if you like historical fiction.

Desert Willow - by Patricia Beal

https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1576001859l/48896328._SY475_.jpg

About the book:

After a failed engagement, Captain Andrew Lee James has focused on building a career in the Army he loves. That commitment includes helping a feisty, out-of-work ballerina whose devotion to her grandmother’s dying wish immediately grabs his heart. She’s the one, but will he be able to win the heart of a woman who has vowed to never be involved with a soldier?

College graduate Clara Malone swore to never love anyone in the military again but when her dying grandmother asks her to deliver a love letter to the general who broke her heart decades ago, she agrees and finds herself escorted by a handsome Army captain whose kindness challenges her beliefs. Surrounded by desert willows that shower her path with pretty pink flowers and sing with the buzzing of hummingbirds, Clara enjoys the wild beauty of El Paso—and her time with Andrew—more than expected.

Can she deliver her grandmother’s last love letter without losing her heart to a man who represents everything she fears?

My review:

This was an interesting story, if a bit slow, for my taste.  I liked Andrew and how he had such a strong faith in God, yet I question why he almost married a woman who doesn't sound like she was a Christian.  I also felt like he got involved too quickly with Clara as she had turned away from her faith years ago.  I was annoyed that Andrew and Clara both were considering their exes again, especially after what they each had done to them.  I also felt like Clara somewhat excuses herself for the situation with her ex before even though she knew it was wrong.  I did like the discussions about their faith and that they prayed and attended church.  I thought the mystery of the letter was intriguing and also what she ended up finding out.  There was some sweet romance.  There's a strong theme of not judging and forgiving yourself and others.  The narrator was fine as I listened to it on Audible though I did have to listen at 1.5 - 2.5 speed, otherwise way too slow.  You might like it if you like stories about second chances, military or ballerinas.

A Reckless Love - The Daughtry House Series 3 - by Beth White

Cover Art

About the book:

These two may have met their match--in each other.
In the fine tradition established by her Southern grandmama, Aurora Daughtry has recently orchestrated the marriage of her eldest sister and facilitated her middle sister's engagement. Just when it seems there is nothing left to absorb her considerable talent for managing people, in walks federal deputy marshal Zane Sager.

But Zane is not at Daughtry House for a vacation. He's tracking a killer and collecting two key witnesses to a federal judge's murder.

Aurora takes it upon herself to disabuse the cynical lawman of his conviction that the world is out to get him. But just as she's on the verge of cracking Zane's defenses, the man he is after reminds him that no one he loves is safe. Ever.

My review:

This was an exciting story about a feisty Southern belle finding her way after the Civil War.  Aurora was a force to behold, only nineteen yet full of plans.  Very strong-willed, a little crazy and reckless, I shook my head a lot at her, sometimes laughing, sometimes in disbelief.  I hadn't read the first two books so it was fun getting to know her sisters as well and can't wait to read their stories.  This worked pretty well as a stand-alone but I wanted to know the backstories better.  I liked how the sisters wanted to be useful, both during a tragedy and with helping the former black slaves make a life for themselves after the Civil War ended.  One sister was helping them with their education and they had employed some of them as well.  They had worshiped and ate with them.  It was interesting learning more about the violence and unrest happening in the South during this period, a lot of it caused by the Klu Klux Klan, and how marshals and other lawmen were trying to arrest the perpetrators and bring them to justice.  There was a lot of action, some romance which seemed a bit quick to me, some humor and faith as both Zane and Aurora were believers, along with most of her family.  Her grandmother gets a special mention for also being a quirky and incredibly strong woman.  I recommend this story if you like historical fiction.

51986384. sy475

About the book:

Welcome to the Barks & Beans Cafe, a quaint place where folks pet shelter dogs while enjoying a cup of java...and where murder sometimes pays a visit.

Fed up with her go-nowhere job, newly single Macy Hatfield moves back to her small hometown in West Virginia. She joins forces with her brother Bo in his crazy new venture—the Barks & Beans Cafe, which caters to dog lovers and coffee drinkers alike.

When a golf instructor is murdered at the nearby spiritual center, Macy winds up adopting his Great Dane. Just after Macy finds a mysterious message sewn under the dog's collar, her Dane is dognapped. She launches into a relentless search for her newfound canine friend, but along the way, she digs up a cruel and confident killer.

Join siblings Macy and Bo Hatfield as they sniff out crimes in their hometown...with plenty of dogs along for the ride! The Barks & Beans Cafe cozy mystery series features a small town, an amateur sleuth, and no swearing or graphic scenes.

My review:

I enjoyed this mystery, especially because of it's focus on dogs and adoption.  I liked Macy, even though sometimes she did some stupid things when she should have been more careful!  She loved dogs, was curious and liked to investigate.  Her and her brother had gone through some hard things in their lives and both of them had been recently dumped.  Her brother was a great guy, hardworking and protective of her.  He also cooked!  This was a clean read, no language or sex.  There were some love interests for both of them but just the beginning of interest, not really romance.  They mention going to church and Bo prayed before a meal but there's also a spiritual center featured where New Age experiences are taught, which I didn't like to see.  Macy does lie a few times, too.  I thought the mystery was interesting and I am curious to see how their love lives develop.  I just hope there isn't New Age material in her next books.

Touching Story of Hope: "Stories that Bind Us" - by Susie Finkbeiner

Cover Art

About the book:

Rediscover the power of story to open the doors of our hearts
Betty Sweet never expected to be a widow at forty. With so much life still in front of her, she tries to figure out what's next, never imagining what God had in mind.

When her estranged sister returns to town, Betty finds herself taking on the care of a five-year-old nephew she never knew she had. In 1960s small-town Michigan, they make an odd pair. Betty with her pink button nose and bouffant hair. Hugo with his light brown skin and large brown eyes. But more powerful than what makes them different is what they share: the heartache of an empty space in their lives. Slowly, they will learn to trust one another as they discover common ground and healing through the magic of storytelling.

My review:

This was a bittersweet story as Betty is grieving her husband, yet discovering a nephew she never knew she had and the joy he brings to her life.  We discover more of her life through her memories scattered throughout the story; she had a hard childhood but filled with good memories, too, and had married a wonderful man.  Betty was such a sweet woman, taking care of her sister in her childhood and when she comes back to her.  They had a hard time of it, with a mother who had some issues, and being poor besides.  It seems that her sister might have some of the same problems as their mother and I can't imagine how hard that would be to deal with, for everyone involved.  I loved how Betty wanted to give her nephew a happier life and a real childhood, instead of being worried and uptight.  It was sweet how she made up stories that tried to teach him life lessons while being fun and imaginative.  She also had a strong faith and would pray throughout the story, as well as go to church.  There was also a great discussion with her father-in-law about not worrying and trusting God.  He was quite a the character and very funny.  They were such a wonderful family; her sister-in-law and brothers-in-law were so caring and watched out for her.  It was interesting how her eyes started to open to events happening in the country and around the world, including the civil rights movement.  This was a story about everyday people trying to make their world a better place.  I would recommend it if you like touching stories that are filled with hope.
