Sweet Escape to the Beach! 'Her Heart's Desire' - A Season in Pinecraft 1 - by Shelley Shepard Gray

About the book:

What happens when we allow our pasts to define our futures?

Mary Margaret Miller needs an escape from her small Amish community. She boards a bus, all alone, for a vacation in Pinecraft, Florida. Meeting Betsy and Lilly on the way, she's amazed to find two kindred spirits. They become fast friends and determine to have the best two weeks of their lives. For Mary, it starts when she meets Jayson Raber, a handsome and charming carpenter.

Jayson is taken with Mary from the get-go, but he has responsibilities back home in Kentucky--including a girl he's supposed to marry. And when someone from Mary's past shows up in Pinecraft, it seems like her perfect vacation is ruined. But that's nothing compared to what's coming when she realizes what Jayson has been hiding . . .

My review:

This was a sweet story and I really liked how we got different points of view and different storylines so there was always something going on!  I admired Mary and for her willingness to forgive and move on when her unexpected visitor showed up, though it wasn't easy.  Jayson was in quite the predicament, so that was an interesting situation he had to handle.  We also got to see how the visitor felt and her changes in the story and then how someone she meets has his life changed for the better.  The setting was wonderful, of course, so picturesque and definitely makes me wish for the beach!  There's lots of talk about faith and there's also sweet romance!  I'm looking forward to the next one!  I recommend this book if you like Amish or romance stories.

Wonderful Historical! 'The Secrets of Emberwild' - by Stephenia H. McGee

About the book:

A gifted trainer in a time women are not allowed to race, Nora Fenton prefers horses to men. They're easier to handle, they're more reliable, and they never tell her what to do. After her father's passing, Nora is determined to save her struggling horse farm, starting with entering her prize colt into the harness races at the 1905 Mississippi and West Alabama Fair. If she wins, she may have a chance at independence. But when a stranger arrives and starts asking disconcerting questions, she suspects he may have other motives than unseating her in the training job that is rightfully hers.

Silas Cavallero will do whatever it takes to solve the mystery of his father's death--even if it means training an unwieldy colt for Nora, who wants nothing more than to see him gone. But when mysterious accidents threaten their safety and circumstances shrouded in secrets begin unlocking clues to his past, Silas will have to decide if the truth is worth the risk of ruining everything for the feisty woman he's come to admire.

My review:

This was a wonderful story by a new author to me!  I loved Nora's feistiness and her determination to build the life she wanted, which meant she could be incredibly stubborn and even pigheaded sometimes.  And Silas was so wonderful and had such a gentle way with her and the colt, Arrow.  Arrow is really the third main character in the story as he's got such a big personality and brings them together so much of the time!  Their interactions were always interesting!  There was some sweet romance and a little mystery as well when accidents started happening.  Nora's uncle and mother were pretty frustrating at times and there's a mystery there as well.  This was a story I didn't want to put down!  I highly recommend it!

Best Yet! 'Critical Threat' - Extreme Measures 3 - by Lynette Eason

About the book:

Working with the son of a serial killer? That's a first.

FBI Special Agent Grace Billingsley tracks serial killers, using her skills as a psychiatrist and behavioral analyst to get dangerous people off the street and safely behind bars. But prison psychiatrist Sam Monroe knows that just because a killer is incarcerated doesn't mean they're not a threat. His own father, Peter, is a serial killer--in prison but certainly not out of Sam's life, as much as he wishes he was.

When bodies start showing up with startling similarities to Peter's MO, Sam and Grace are both called in to consult. They've met before, and though Grace thought they'd made a real connection, Sam ghosted her. They'll have to get past the awkwardness and mistrust to solve this case--especially because it's about to get personal.

My review:

This was my favorite yet by Lynette Eason and that's saying something as she's one of my favorite authors!  The ending blew me away!  I loved the investigation aspect of the story and the psychology of trying to figure out why a serial killer does what he does.  This had a good pace with some crazy moments for Grace thrown in here and there both on the personal front and the professional and then the suspense really amped up at the end along with some surprises.   Grace was really put through the ringer here and I admired how strong she was, especially learning that she had migraines to deal with on top of everything else!  There were some good conversations about the nature of good and evil and God's forgiveness and people's choices.  There was also some romance.  This felt like more of a stand-alone book than a book three but I've really been enjoying the rest of the series about Grace's friends so I highly recommend them and am excited about one more still coming!  I definitely recommend this one!
